WLSA APPLAUDS JUSTICE IREEN MAMBILIMA

Women and Law in Southern Africa would like to congratulate the Electoral Commission of Zambia Chairperson Justice Ireen Mambilima for having conducted the 2011 Tripartite Elections in a democratic, professional and transparent manner.

You are truly a woman of substance and we are proud and honoured to have you as a member of the WLSA National Board. Only a woman of great integrity such as yourself could have upheld the national rule of law and successfully held elections under extremely difficult conditions and circumstances. We wish you many more years at the helm of ECZ.

ASAZA and WLSA to open more CRC's

The ASAZA Program and Women and Law in Southern Africa-Zambia currently provide five Coordinated Response Centers (CRCs) in Zambia and plan to open more. CRCs are important resources for survivors of gender based violence.

“Coordinated r
esponse centers (CRC's) are centers where survivors of gender based violence can access medical, legal and psychological support,” explains ASAZA, a program of CARE International-Zambia.  “At coordinated response centers, trained professionals are available to respond to the needs of  gender based violence.”

Medical officers, social workers, counselors, victim support unit officers, and paralegals are available at CRC's to assist survivors of violence.  Survivors can access health services such as medical exams, post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and the emergency pill to prevent pregnancy.  Survivors can also access psychological counseling and a range of legal services, such as legal advice and court preparation.
CRC's are currently located in Lusaka, Mazabuka, Chipata, and Kabwe, but many more are urgently needed throughout Zambia.   ASAZ
A and WLSA-Zambia  plan to open new CRCs in Kitwe, Ndola, and Livingstone. They hope to expand elsewhere soon.
